In order to become a licensed landscape architect, it is necessary to have a formal education in the field of landscape architecture. There are multiple pathways to a degree, including earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the field of landscape architecture from an accredited university. Once you have completed the degree, you will need to take and pass the Landscape Architect Registration Exam (LARE) administered by CLARB. Once you have passed the LARE, you will need to meet the experience, education and licensure requirements set by your jurisdiction to obtain a license.
After completing a site analysis, landscape architects develop design concepts and prepare plans, sections, elevations, details and specifications that show the proposed layout of hardscape and softscape elements. This includes the placement of paving, water features, trees, plants and other structural elements as well as the choice of materials, colors, textures and plant species. Landscape architects also produce construction documents and submit them to the appropriate public agency for review, comments and action.
The licensure requirements for landscape designers vary by jurisdiction. For New York, landscape architects may practice as a sole proprietor or in partnership authorized under Article 8-B of the New York Partnership Law, provided that the partners have met all the requirements for licensure as a landscape architect.
